Menopause: A time of grace, beauty, and wisdom

Depending on a woman’s health, menopause can feel like a disease, as opposed to a natural stage, marking the end of childbearing years. Menopause is only one of several stages in the female reproductive life. It is not a disease and it is not the end of life: most women will live 25 to 30 years after the onset of menopause. By the year 2030 it is estimated that 1.2 billion women will be over the age of 50. The whole menopausal transition is divided into distinct stages and takes several years for a woman to transit from pre-menopause to post-menopause.

Menopause Symptoms

Even men are familiar with the unpleasant symptoms associated with peri-menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats. The cycle becomes irregular, and sometimes periods are skipped. Some women may complain about vaginal dryness and dry skin, and for some brain fog, loss of memory and weight gain becomes a problem. Some don’t have any symptoms at all, but a majority of women complain of mood swings, unexplained fatigue and insomnia, irritability and depression, lack of concentration, mental fog, memory loss, weight gain, loss of bone density, low libido, vaginal dryness and an increase in urinary tract infections. These symptoms can be very drastic and truly affect a woman’s personal and professional relationships, compromising, sometimes beyond repair, the peace at her work and home life.

Menopause and Hormones

There is another unseen and long-term effect of menopause called, “Estrogen Fall”. Later in the menopause, estrogen-deficiency is associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. In the same manner as testosterone works for men, estrogen has a protective effect on women’s bones, brain and heart.

Hormone replacement therapy has become commonplace in our nation in the past few years: 10 million women are currently using synthetically produced chemicals, which are not human hormones. Clinical studies have confirmed that the risk of breast cancer, when using HRT, increases up to 33%. No wonder that many women are reluctant to Use HRT. A much better alternative, which we offer in our clinics are BIOIDENTICAL Hormonal therapy, Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine and life-style and diet modification.

Acupuncture Menopause Treatment

The one way to help menopause symptoms is to improve your lifestyle and diet: that means reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, eating food rich in plant estrogens, like tofu, tempeh, soybeans, oats, cashews, almonds, alfalfa, apples and flax seeds, learning how to manage stress, sleeping more and exercising moderately. Durind menopause women also need sufficient supplementation of magnesium, calcium and zinc, vitamin C, Vitamin E, B-complex, vitamin D and EPA-DHA.

Acupuncture and medicinal herbs provide tremendous benefits to treat menopausal symptoms naturally. Chinese medicine has used both treatments for thousands of years, improving detoxification, balancing hormones and calming the mind to ease menopause symptoms.
